    A local breeder (who has pied's for sale) is telling be that pied X Pied = 100% Pied offspring? Because Pied is recessive wouldnt that only be 50% pied offspring?

    pied X het pied 25% pied offspring????

    The breeder and Deborah are correct.

    It is interesting that you say "Because Pied is recessive wouldnt that only be 50% pied offspring?" because actually it is because pied is recessive that it is 100%, so obviously you've got something confused in your head.

    For the purposes of this discussion, I'm going to ignore the debates about pied markers and assume that het pieds cannot be recognized visually.

    Here are a few more examples that might help:

    pied x pied = 100% pieds
    pied x het pied = 50% pied, 50% het pied
    pied x normal = 100% het pieds
    het pied x het pied = 25% pied, 50% het pied, 25% normal (the het pieds and the normals would all be considered 66% phet pieds, since you can't tell them apart).
    het pied x normal = 50% het pied, 50% normal (and all of these would be considered 50% phet pied)

    Compare it to co-dom results:
    super pastel x super pastel = 100% super pastel
    super pastel x pastel = 50% super pastel, 50% pastel
    super pastel x normal = 100% pastel
    pastel x pastel = 25% super pastel, 50% pastel, 25% normal
    pastel x normal = 50% pastel, 50% normal

    If you notice, the percentages are exactly the same, the only difference is that you can see that the pastels are pastels, but you can't see whether the het pieds are hets or normals.

    If you did the same thing with a dominant trait, the percentages would still be the same, but in this case instead of not being able to tell the difference between hets and normals, you would not be able to tell the difference between hets (which would show the trait) and homozygous (which show the trait, but carry 2 genes for it).

    if you breed 2 spiders wouldnt you get 50% spiders & 50% normals?:confused:

    Not exactly, if Spider is truely dom and the Homozygous version is not lethal like many believe it to be, then the results would be in the favor of the spider

    25% Homozygous Spider
    50% Heterozygous Spider
    25% Normal

    As a dominate trait the Homo & Het would visual be the same so you would in theory get 75% Spider and 25 % Normal.
