No, they are not the regular rats that you find at the pet store. I'm not sure if there are any differences nutritionally, but some people believe that its easier to get picky eaters to take an ASF. I personally have not witnessed this (i.e. my picker eater decided to eat rats, then hated rats and loved mice, then hated mice and loved ASFs, then hated ASFs and now loves rat pups....still a picky eater). I like the ASFs because of their ease of breeding. They do not smell as bad as regular rats and they are more appropriately sized when full grown for a ball python.
