getting a tub for second bp what do i need?
ill be getting a second bp and im gonna go with a tub(target), since the tank is hard to keep up. what all do i need. i have access to a uth only not heat tape. what do i need and where do i need to put everything. thanks.
Re: getting a tub for second bp what do i need?
it's basically just the same as setting up a tank, except it's plastic. Just make sure you melt some holes in the side, hook up the uth to a thermostat/dimmer and provide a couple hides and fresh water and you're good to go. also make sure they can't push the lid off by putting a heavy book or strapping the lid down somehow, but you can use your imagination on that one.
Re: getting a tub for second bp what do i need?
Your going to need a Thermostat to control the UTH. You dont want it getting to hot and burning the snake. Put the UTH on one side of the tub, That way the snake can regulate its temperature. Your also going to need an acurite thermometor/hygrometer.

i have a uth and a rheostat. i will use paper towels as the substrate. will the uth keep the ambient up around the 80's. the room temp will be low 70's. i do have a acurite thermometor/hygrometer.

make sure you have 2 hides and a water dish. Its pretty much the same as a tank. Heat one side to 92, get the other one to about 80. Keep a close eye on the tub for a while, especially if using a rheostat. It will take some experimentation to figure out how many holes to put in the tub. I do a row all the way around, halfway up and space em at probably 4 or 5 inches from each other. If humidity is still too high then you can add more. If you put too many is possible to cover them but it doesn't look very nice at all.

will the ambient temps stay in the 80's with just the uth. the temps in my house stays in the low 70's

It depends on the size of the tub you are trying to heat, how big the UTH is and how you have it orientated. You'll have to do some experimentation to get it right, give yourself at least a few days before you bring home your new snake to get the enclosure set up and get temperatures regulated.
One thing you can try, which I use on a couple of my colubrid tubs and tanks is putting a couple layers of aluminum foil directly on the bottom of the tub, in between the tub and the UTH. That will help spread out the heat a little more evenly and should prevent there being a hot spot directly over the UTH. Just use some aluminum foil tape (you can get it at Wal-Mart for about $8 for a roll that will last you forever) to tape it down.

I'm moving to the tub system too...I saw you mentioned burning holes in the tub...Is that the best way? What do you use to burn the holes? Can you drill holes?

You can use a drill, just be careful not to crack the tub with the drill.

you can burn(soldering iron) or drill them whatever is easier just take your time and see what the ambient temp/humidity is after every couple holes... cause if you do too much your temps or humid will be too low.. and youll have to patch them up.. ;)
