    thinkin about a carpet now
i was almost dead set on a pastel ball, but realized i wanted something that would be out and about more than a ball. i also really liked the idea of a somewhat arboreal snake, so ive started lookin into carpets. this will be my first snake ever, but im pretty experienced with keeping animals in general, so im not a total noob lol. would this be a good snake for me? oh and i want a snake that i can hold like you can a ball.

and if anyone has pictures of their snakes/enclosures, please post them. im thinkin about doing a foam/quickcrete background with shelves, pockets for plants, branches etc. thanks

    That's my setup.

They're easy to handle, they just love to grab stuff with their tails so that sometimes makes it hard... but maybe also because I have a pretty large male.

Have you read many caresheets? Do you know what kind of cage you want? Heating? Temperatures? Live/frozen?

PM me if you want more info! :D

i'd say a carpet would make a great first snake for most people... the only question is, how big of a snake and enclosure do you want? and what color/pattern do you like the most? these questions will determine which subspecies you choose.
there are also a ton of posts in the morelia section with pictures of setups.

no i havent read much into them yet as i just started looking into them this afternoon :P i guess i needa start looking around this section of the forum more lol

id prefer f/t over live. i dont wanna have to go buy a mouse and kill it every week or set up a rat rack.

just about any carpet from a reputable breeder will eat f/t... shouldn't be an issue.

i dont think i want a snake over like 6ish feet because space is an issue. this makes me want an irian jaya. i could get a female and be pushing my size limit. however, most of the jungles ive seen are much prettier than the IJs ive seen which makes me want one of those, but theyre a little larger. i could get a male and stay in my size range i think, but ive also heard theyre more nippy when young than IJs. what do yall think i should get??

i don't think you can really say that any will be nippier than any others... they can be nippy when thy're young, that's about it.
if you like jungles i'd get a jungle... if you get a male you should be fine with a 3' cage, which i'm guessing is your size constraint.

Re: thinkin about a carpet now
I'm posting from work. My little IJ pair are in 20 qt tubs. I have them on a shelf in my rack and will take pictures. I'll also make a "how to" to set them up using a heat pad. Carpets are great! They are much more active than BPs. No offence to the keepers, as we all have what we like, but I refuse to keep a BP. I've been trying to find a 07 or early 08 HY jungle as those are pretty much all I like. Coastals and diamonds are the only thing way out of your size limit (by resonable numbers, some snakes can grow larger than expected.) Will Bird has some resonably priced jungles right now. Google "Will Bird carpet" and its eco-something to his website. Generally carpets are going to be nasty as babies but the bite isn't bad at all. However, you will bleed and they will bite over and over. (hench, my want for a older one) If you have any questions please post up. A move to the Morelia page might help too, as these fall in that species.
