humidity

Hello, I'm new to the site. There is so much fantastic information here, I could read for hours! My question is, has anyone used the Habba Mist for increasing the humidity in their tank? If you have i would love to hear from ya! I'm considering purchasing one, so I don't have to constantly mist my tank. It's getting tiresome. I do have a screen top , but have part of it covered to keep the heat and humidity in. I'm right on with the heat, it's the humidity I'm having trouble with. Thanks, Tina

Hi Tina! I have not used the product you are asking about, but am wondering if you have tried a bowl of damp sphagnum moss? Works great for my cages and when my tubs need a bump :gj:

Haven't tried one of those but I'm sure someone has.. In the meantime have you tried putting the water bowl partly on the heatmat so that some of it evaporates and contributes to the humidity? I do this i my viv and it helps immensley - I only have to mist when she is shedding :)

I haven't tried putting it in a bowl, however I have one of those bottomless, small, wooden hides and I have the moss under it and he seems to love it in there , only I can't mist it often as he is in there most of the time. So, i mist around everything else to keep it up. Do you think a separate bowl of the moss might make a difference?

I don't have my heat mat installed just yet. I'm trying to find a thermostat for it first. But I am able to keep his temps up fine. My hope is to exchange the che I am currently using , for the heat mat, as I've heard the che can contribute to dry air. However, when I do hook it up, i just may try what you've suggested and see if it gives it a boost. Thanks, oh, any suggestions on an "affordable" thermostat for the heatmat?

I'm just waiting for a Habistat Mat Thermostat to be delivered. Have currently got heat mat on a light dimmer plug as last stat broke but although this works I wouldn't reccommend using a dimmer as it means you have to manually adjust it if room temp fluctuates to stop the mat heating up or cooling down ... Also, the Mat Stat is a much safer way of doing it. Once you get the Mat Stat you will still need to monitor the temps to get the setting right tpo get teh right temp gradient. The mat won't provide ambient heat - it will just provide a belly heat basking spot for your snake so you may still need to use the CHE too - do you have that on a stat at the moment?

i actually just hooked up a humidifier that i bought at target and set it on a timer and it works perfectally :) im having trouble with the temp though

i've been having issues with my guy recently, hes still very frendly, but he hasnt been eating and not leaving the hide, i've been throwing in some of that S. Moss but never actually had a hydrometre, today i picked one up when as well as 2 digital thermometres, when i fired up the Hydrometre i realized that my whole appartment, INCLUDING my ball's tank was at 11% !! (no wonder ive been waking up with dry mouth/nose i was blaming it on the fact i am a smoker).

I went to Canadian Tire and picked up a Cold Mist Humidifier. and i took a small fountain that i had and put it in his tank, and pointed my heat lamp at it to evaporate it, Im now up to 60% Humidity in the tank ( :D )

Just an idea if you have a tank big enough (or a fountain small enough)


Cold Hide : 27c / 80.6f
Hot Hide : 33c / 91
Ambient : 26c / 80
Humidity : 60%

now im just gonna give him a couple days before i offer him a rat again & Handle him

I was having some trouble in my glass tank with humidity.

But now I've solved the problem!

The initial setup involved cypress or other snake bedding stuff from the pet store. I didn't end up likeing that, expesially after some really messy poo and bloody mouse experiences... And I learned the hard way about the 1/2 log and poo as well...

I was also worried about mites and mold.

So when I was ready to move from my 10 gal to the 20gal tank, I made some changes. I used foam board lined with natural rock looking self adhesive tiles. This insulated the floor, sides, and back wall, leaving only the front clear for viewing. The mesh top is 2/3 covered with foam board as well.

I made 2 hides by lining small boxes with the tile for now. I'm on the lookout for cheap washable hides, but these work great for now.

I have one UTH (controlled by a simple rheostat) under 1/2 of one hide and the water dish. But that was not giving me the humidity I needed- about 30%. I still had to mist. So I figured out a way to make use of the bag of bedding materials. I took a mesh pencil holder like this: http://www.amazon.com/ROL62556-Penci...ef=pd_sbs_op_3 and stuffed it full of bedding. Then I soaked it in warm water for a few minutes, let it drain, then placed in the tank. Now the humidity is holding right around 60%. Now during shedding time, I can easily crank it to 80% just by covering the screen top a little more.

Anyway, it is a much better setup than the original and I'm sure I'll keep tweaking it over time. But if you are having humidity issues, try something like the mesh pencil holder or just a plastic bowl with lid and punch it full of holes. Fill with moss or other snake friendly bedding and just add water.
