Pink Eye Dilute-High White?
Hey everyone,
We produced a PED in our last litter of rats from Connie, and I couldnt remember if PED is considered a bad marker for megacolon and should be avoided for breeding. My girlfriend really likes her so we are thinking about keeping her back.

No it's not (unless the dilution is hiding white markings).

You got a PED? I'm suprised, I haven't produced any in my own collection. You sure its not a fawn? (RED)

Ugh! Just noticed my post earlier didnt go through. Anyway, we held some of our hoodeds right side by side with what we though was the PED, and it is definitely not white, so I think you are right about it being a fawn. Heres the thing that is weirding me out...there were 8 in the litter, 2 black berks, 2 black hooded, the fawn and 3 varying shades of beige hooded. One of the beige hoodeds is significantly darker than the other two and has black eyes with a noticeable red undertone, while the two lighter ones have red eyes as well. Is the lighter color and the red eyes because the beige hooded was diluted by the PED gene, causing the lightness and displaying the red eye color? We have another mother giving birth in the tub below so I dont want to make too much of a hassle tonight, but maybe get some pics up tomorrow.

To get either topaz (PED) or fawn (RED), you need to have an agouti base.
The RED or PED on a black base will give you champagne (PED) or beige (RED).
Don't forget about siamese, siamese babies are dark beige with very ruby eyes that will slowly lose that dark gradient as they grow to only having dark points.
If it's a very light color that gradually gets darker at the points, it's a himalayan. Himalayan is an albino siamese, since it's on the same locus, with one copy of each gene, you get the himalayan.
Like I said, I haven't seen any champagnes or topaz (PED) in my colony, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but I'm more along the line that you have siamese and beiges.

My camera is sucking the batteries dry, they are charging right now so I will have pics in a few hours. It looks a lot like the lightest one on the far left of your pic. It is definitely solid, very light, but not white, and it is from a black base with red eyes (they have darkened, used to be a very light red, hence why I thought pink). Himalayan is what I am thinking now, or just a freakishly light beige self/berk. I will get pics up and get an updated shot if we end up keeping her.
