UTH heat - warm hide

Hello

The temp probe in my warm hide is 106 deg f is this too hot Are the UTH regulated as not too hurt my snake.

He is only in 10 gal but I think he is sitting on top of the probe and it is touching the glass.

Please advise I dont watn to hurt my snake

-Bites her bottom lip for a second.- YES! That's way too hot. The warm side should be approximately 90-94F. Are you using a rheostat or thermostat for your UTH?

I guess I better get one asap - is 106F really that hot. It seems that he burrowed to expose the glass maybe he wants the heat?

I am having problems keep the heat at 80deg ambient and I have foam on three sides plus the top covered??

People say not to use heat lamps etc etc.

Not sure how to keep the ambient up in the tank any advice

Personally speaking? Ditch the glass terrarium and get yourself an appropriately sized sterilite tub. Slap the uth on it, get a thermostat, and set him up in there. I tend to have great temps in my tubs and so do most of the people here.

ACK. And yes. 106F is WAY too hot. You're going to burn his belly with that kind of heat.

No, no UTH is regulated. You MUST have a thermostat or at least a dimmer to control the heat from any source for reptiles. The only animal heat pads that have any 'control' to them are ones made for small mammals that only reach a high of 85.

Especially in a 10g tank, you NEED to have a thermostat. Even a low end ZooMed ReptiTemp 500R will do if you can't afford the better ones. And sadly, thermostats can really only be gotten online.

Oh, and there's no reason to get rid of the tank. I have 2 10g tanks going right now with young BPs in them and they are more stable as far as temps and humidity than ANY tub in the house. It's all about preference, location, and how much work you're willing to put in. :)

Just did a trip to home depot to get a cheap rheostat and ordering a thermostat tonight - online . Temp is dropping and I will get it in check!

Only had him a day or so hopefully I have not hurt him.

Those who have a glass tank do you have any other source of heat than a uth. Not sure if I have to supplement some additiaonl heat to bring up the ambient - sitting at around 75 deg

Any advice would be great - just trying to get started here and dont want to hurt my new pet

I have a 20 gal glass enclosure and I have the ZooMed "Slider" dome top. In one of the sockets I have one ceramic heat emitter bulb. Keeps my entire terrarium at an 80 degree ambient temp. On the hot side I have a ZooMed UTH which keeps his hot hide at about 92 degrees. Planning on getting another ceramic bulb tomorrow. They don't emit light but emit plenty of heat. I highly recommend them. Doesn't mess with my humidity either. Using fir and sphagnum moss, it stays at a steady 65%

The best mid range stat is either the Johnson or Ranco. Both are on/off style and work wonderfully. I prefer the Johnson personally, simply because the unit is smaller and the click is quieter. :)

For ambient temps in my tanks, I hang lamps about 12" above the top with a 50w bulb. That sheds some light (they're on timers) and gives ambient heat a boost. This time of year, tho, 75 ambient isn't really that bad.

I've changed my mind about getting a second ceramic heat emitter bulb because one seems to be working just fine. It keeps it at a constant 80 ambient temp so that's good, especially for it being winter in the Northeast lol.

Ceramic emitter bulbs run a bit expensive (about $35) but I've had this same one for quite some time. Had 2 baby tortoises about 2 years ago who had this bulb on 24/7. Had them for about 6 months with the bulb running 24/7.

Now, 2 years later, dug out that dome top, same bulbs still in it and it still pumps heat like the day I got it. Definitely worth the money.
