    Food Size
hey guys, just a question for ya.

I have a 27-28" Ball Python, what size mice/rats should i be feeding him? he is currently eating adult mice, 2 a week.

i have tried rat pups, s/he took them readily, but i dont like the quality of rat pups that are available to me, the rat weiling (spelling?) i refused to feed them to him, they smelled as though they had been thawed multiple times and ranked of the feces frozen to them.

the only place that sells quality frozen mice around here does not carry rat pups or weilings, only small (about a 6" body, maybe bigger), medium (about a 7-8" body, maybe bigger), and large rat (a full grown, massive rat...)

btw, i am talking frozen rats/mice, i refuse to feed live.

Don't necessarily go by the length of the snake, go by the girth. The widest part should be your gauge for prey/food items. The width of the prey/food = width of the snake. Go here for the care sheet which explains it all...

PS - some go by weight as well, but I found the above to work fine for past snakes and current BP (08)

I am feeding currently adult f/t mice once every 5 days.

Like was said about going by the length of the snake is very difficult. Most judge by the girth and the weight of the snake.

I feed most of my snakes weaned rats from the time they are 300+ grams. I rarely feed anything over a weaned rat.

so the length of the rat doesnt matter either? so a 6" bodied rat would be ok as long as it is the same width as the snake?

are weaned rats about the size of an Adult mouse?

Weaned rats are 3 to 4 weeks old (55-85 grams), an adult mouse is about 25/30 grams

When you purchase rats on-line, always go by their weight and not the size that they are called.

I purchase from the Mouse Factory because they have really high quality rodents. Their small size rat is 55g and their medium rat is 90g.

When my snakes were young, I always fed between 10-15% of their body weight; I don't really exceed a 90-100g prey size.
