but they do it to balance the books before the end of year. holidays just happen to fall around that time.

I'm sorry man. I know how big companies are. Both of my parents worked for an oil company. We all know how people feel about those companies. They don't treat their employees any better than anybody else. I hope everything bounces back quickly for you.
