New BP help!

Which would be better to get, a baby BP or adult BP? Is there a really big differnce between their age characteristics? Which one would be easier to handle?

Depends on the snake really. I have extremely tame adults and very nippy adults. I also have a sweetheart of a mojave baby and a pastel baby who thinks I'm dinner.

Your best bet would be sure to do your research and ask the breeder LOTS of questions

Well, the biggest difference is size. :P As for which is better, I guess it really just depends on what you're looking for. I don't think one is better than another.

Babies tend to be more nervous and defensive. But there are plenty of calm, laid-back babies. Adults tend to be more calm and laid back, but there are also nervous ones.

If you're afraid of getting bit....a bite from a baby BP will just make you jump and then laugh. A bite from an adult would be a lot scarier if you're not used to it. Still nothing dangerous, but an aggressive/defensive adult BP can be intimidating.

If you get a baby, you can watch it grow and get to know its particular quirks. Babies also usually eat very well, as they are growing so fast. As adults, BP's often go through phases where they just don't seem to care about food as much....which can be disconcerting to a new keeper.

If you get a chance....try to handle some BP's to see what you like before you buy.

Well, my first BP I got as a baby, and my second one I got as an adult. I have to say, I'm really glad I'm getting to raise the baby because she's become accustomed to a schedule with me for handling/feeding times and she's used to her surroundings and routine. My adult, on the other hand is still new to me just as I am new to it. There's definitely a transition going on that they may not necessarily enjoy or ever get used to. That's just my opinion though. I'd prefer to get a baby and raise it if I have the choice.

All of my BP, I got from babies. But I have to agree, it all depends on the snakes.
My Adult normal female, almost always hiss whenever I try to pick her up since she was a juvenile. She never try to strike though :)

My male pastel used to be very nervous, and frequently strike ( never really got me though ), but after a couple of months grows up to be really calm and almost head tame :)
My youngest snake, a female bumblebee, is still quite nervous, but never tries to strike.

It's also really fun to watch them grow up :D

I also have 2 hondurans. One is really calm, and the other one doesn't really like to be handled :)

As a new owner, I think you're better off getting a baby. That way if there are any issues with nippiness, you can work through them while the snake is still young. As long as you work with it, they will almost always calm down over time. Chances are, a young snake will be pretty docile, and you can go from there. Handle the BP you're intrested in before you buy. Pay attention to how it reacts to being picked up and handled. You will smell new to it, and your touch will be unfamiliar. Both of these things can stress a snake, and if it's not agressive in that situation, you should be able to go up from there. Remember that some BP's almost seem to enjoy being handled while others just seem to tolorate it.

Start with a baby. You will grow a better respect from raising it yourself.

it depends on what you are planing to do with the BP. if you are going to breed it like i do then i would go with the adult. but if you are just wanting a pet then i would go with the baby. i dont do just breeding i also have just pets. when it is just a pet i find it fun to be able to raise the baby from hatchling to adult. hope that helps.
