Misting

I'm cheap, and lazy. So I was thinking about ways to mist the habitat to help with the humidity. Using a regular spray bottle is a pita, I have to mist 2-3 times a day and it takes probably a minute of constant pumping on the handle to get everything damp enough. By then a lot of heat has escaped.

I was walking thru Lowe's yesterday and found the perfect solution without going into the expense of an automatic mister- one of those weed killer/pesticide pump bottles that pressurize and have a nice long tube and wand with a nozzle on the end. Now, a few pumps on the handle, I can open the cage just a crack, stick the end of the wand in, mist to my heart's content and get more moisture in there in 10 seconds than I could with 2 minutes of furious misting with the spray bottle.

It is a 2 gallon container, and it was on sale for 12 bucks.

Or your could cover the top of the tank with tin foil and Duct tape and not have to mist at all.

The cage is completely enclosed, but it's pretty large and has 2 heat lamps in it so it dries out if I don't mist. And sorry, no tin foil and duct tape, I don't think my wife would like the looks of that in our family room! :)

You have a few more options then one is to use a UTH or RHP and get rid of the lights, or keep doing like you've been doing and just mist the crap out of the cage.

RHP is about the only other option, since it's a wooden enclosure and the wood is 3/4" thick, a UTH isn't practical.

I was thinking about this dog house heater. I emailed the people who make it and he said they sell a lot of them to reptile keepers. It's got a thermostat on it and isn't real expensive:

Do you see the sticker that says hot? I would want to know how hot. Snakes do have the same ability a warm blooded dog does. If it gets too hot the dog will stay clear, the snake might not. Pet stores sell a lot of heat rocks for snakes as well.

What substrate do you use?

I did see that sticker. There is a heat shield that goes on top, I figured that'd take care of having the hot part exposed to the snake.

I use aspen as substrate.
