4ft'ER good for 40?

I've got a 4ft, maybe + ? and keep him in a 40 gallon tank? To me this almost seems too small, however i use glass tanks and can't find one that exceeds 40 gallon, that is used for reptiles? OR am i fine with a 40 gallon tank for a boa this size?

Also, another question. I use Aspen as bedding, i'm able to keep heat and humidity right and have no problem, however it gets to be expensive...So i was thinking about just moving to newspaper, however my boy LOVES to hide under the Aspen, he spends more time under the aspen then in his hides. Would this be a sour move to change his aspen to newspaper, or anything else for that matter and take away something he seems to love? I'm not entirely sure how snakes feel about these changes. Or do i suck it up and just continue with the aspen?

i recommend a 75 gallon they last up to about 6 feet of snake but true they arent any "snake" cages made above 40 gallons you'll have to get crafty

switched all my snakes from aspen to newspaper for cost and also simplicity and they just go in their hides now. no noticable difference in mood.

If you'd like to stick to a loose substrate and still keep it cheap you could try switching to cypress mulch. You can get a 40lb bag at walmart for $2-3. It comes in bigger chunks than aspen but is still burrow-in-able (that a word? =P) And it holds humidity very well.

Alright, awesome..thanks for the advice. So pretty much i need to upgrade the size of my tank, but i'm going to have to make one myself for the most part? I'm really not good with that type of thing, so this could very well be a challenge.

I just moved over the weekend, and my dad took down his 180gal fish tank, kept the tank and stand, and blah blah. I've been looking at it ALOT and been thinking of how I could cover everything and make it hard for my boa to escape from. I'd say, just try to find something bigger and get creative, sit there and stare at it and think of how to make it work out LOL. I need to spend more time working on my dad so he'll let me convert it, and less time planning out the conversions. But, I think your 40gal is only two and a half feet in length, and that's too short right now. Maybs buy another 40 and try to figure out how to combine them :D

Yeah, i guess that's not really a bad idea at all. Although i've never once had my boy try and escape, and he probably very well could if he wanted to, i need to see what i can do...i do know they are quite the escape artists.

You will need to upgrade, yes. I recommend Animal Plastic cages. Little spendy, but well worth it. Easy to clean, and they hold heat and moisture very well.

As far as substrate goes. Stick with aspen. Your boa obviously loves. Go to BeanFarm.com. That's not the exact link, but close. You can get a 46 lb bag for relatively cheap.

for a snake thats 4ft + I would recommend either a home-made or professional snake cage (such as animal plastics, boaphile, etc)

Glass tanks arent the best for big heavy snakes... and you'll have trouble getting a good lid that the snake cant pop off or break

Yeah, I've been thinking about getting a professional made cage, like these Animal Plastics and what not you guys speak of for awhile now, they are spendy, but they really are worth it in the long run i'm assuming?
