Re: Where to get heat tape?
Here http://www.reptilebasics.com/Flexwat...p-1-c-297.html , it can even be assembled according to your spec at no extra charge :gj:

I would go with the 17" flexwatt, don't know about reptile basics, but www.beanfarm.com sells 17" flex that is 20 watts per foot, great stuff.

I'd think it would depend on how you're planning to run it. If you're doing belly heat I would go with 11" for sure. I have 4" on my RBI racks and that makes for a nice toasty warm spot plus gets the cool side up to a decent temp. It's mounted 3" from the back of tub and works extremely well. If you were doing back heat 17" might work but you'd run the risk of maxing out your thermostat depending on what you're using.

One helix could run 4 of my adult racks, thats 6ft of flexwatt per rack, 120 watts per rack, 480 watts per 4 racks, and THAT wouldn't max out the helix. This guys only talking about building one rack. Unless he plans to use one of those crappy A-life thermostats, I think he's in the clear.

Right well you also gotta remember that 20watts per foot is what the flexwatt runs at normally If there was a power surge or if something shorted out that would spike dramatically (I'm an electrical engineering intern so I do know a couple things about this). Now I'm pretty sure most people don't run their flexwatt full on or there'd be a lot of cooked snakes but you always want to be prepared for the worst case scenario. Also, and I could be wrong here if I am feel free to say so, but I thought the max wattage the Helix could handle was 500? Or is it 1000W?

Yes, it is 500W.
Re: Where to get heat tape?
Im going with belly heat. So im guessing about 80 watts, because ima use the 17" heat tape and ima do a foot per level. You think i can use one of those cheapo depo reostats ( i think thats how you spell it) for a little while until i get me a thermostat?
