waitin' on it..

I think that some of my breeding is going to be on hold for a bit. I really want to breed one of my '08 males back to his mom; but, I want to get more meals into him before this. He is producing sperm plugs already, which has me excited, but I still think that I am going to wait maybe a month or more.
Anyone else waiting on certain factors before pairing certain snakes?

Make sure they are not directly related first. :rolleyes:

I'm waiting for my het. pied female to get a little bit more weight on her before I try... she's at 1200g right now (2005)... so she should be good to go in the next couple months! I hope I produce some pieds!

Too each their own, but i completely against breeding related animals. I know many do it, whether to prove something out, or to simpy cut corners and save a few bucks but i am dead set against it. I out cross everything.

What do you mean by 'directly related'? Do you mean offspring back to parent? Offspring back to grandparent? No relation at all? If no relation at all, why not? Evidence that it is bad for the breed? I am curious :)

Yes, she stated she wants to breed the son back to his mom. When you line and inbreed, the good traits may be magnified, but the bad ones are also magnified. Not enough breeding generations have been created from ball python breeding yet to show any signs, but if you want examples, check out what some line breeding has done to certain breeds of dogs. Bull dogs are a prime example, they have been selectively line bred for certain traits for so long that they can't even have their offspring normally anymore for the most part, most give birth via C-section. The american rottweiler is another, they were inbred like crazy, and now hip displacia is popping up like crazy in that breed.

If you want a BP example, look at Caramels. It is not proven, but many feel the kinking problem with this morph is due to too much inbreeding.

Many do it, though i do not, nor will i ever. To each their own though.

I have a few girls in the 1200g-1300g range I'm trying to bulk up to go this season, and an '08 bee at 270g I'm power feeding, hoping he will go this year with a couple of girls (pastel and YB). I have a really nice womaish female who is huge, but never took last season, that I was planning to pair him with as well. I think she ended up taking a few weeks ago, so I might see some late '08 eggs from her in a week or two. On my chart she was only paired with my spider who showed no interest last year, but I know I threw a couple different co-doms with her at the end of the season, so if she lays it will be a surprise. Probably a mixed clutch of mojos and pastels.
