Breeding rats and mice in the same?
Today my friend told me that if I have a mouse colony in the same rack as my rat colony, the rats wouldn't breed because they smell the mouses scent. Is this true?:confused:
Re: Breeding rats and mice in the same?
it wasn't true in my case.. i just got rid of all my mice as they take too long to raise up and i needed the space for more rats but when i was breeding mice and rats, their cages were on top of each other, i use one of those plastic utility storage racks.
Re: Breeding rats and mice in the same?
i breed rats and mice all in the same room very close to each other and i see no signs of them affecting each other.
Re: Breeding rats and mice in the same?
I keep rats and ASF's all in the same room, they all breed fine.
Could be an illness like a virus etc that is keeping them from being fertile. Or, they just need new animals.
Re: Breeding rats and mice in the same?
Oh. Ok. My friend doesn't breed any rats or mice. He just heard someone say that. So he told me because he knew I was gonna breed mice and rats on the same rack
Re: Breeding rats and mice in the same?
I also breed both rats and mice in close proximity and haven't seen any adverse effects...

I've heard that before too from a rat breeder at a reptile show. I've never had any luck breeding mice and I thought it was because they were in the same area with the rats.
Good to know others haven't had a problem.:P

So this is a weird case.
Re: Breeding rats and mice in the same?
I own both mice and rats, I haven't bred the rats yet but my mice produce a litter every 2 weeks just like always.
