I think it looks nice and simple for something whipped up reather quick. The outsides of the text boxes and header box are a little fuzy though. It would be awesome if they had nice crispt edges. Overall, I like the layout and the nav system.
I always do the dummy text too. I like to see what a site looks like with content. When there is nothing there it always looks so boring!

Just out of curiosity, how do you go about starting your own website? I've looked into it, but don't quite understand that stuff too well...

You need a domain. 1and1.com is a good place to register your domain. The company you register your domain with is your Registrar.

You need hosting. 1and1 is also a hosting provider. You do not need to have hosting at the same place you registered your domain. In other words, I could register a domain at GoDaddy.com and then have hosting set up at 1and1, or wherever.

Next, you create HTML pages. Your main page will typically be either index.html

For basic HTML instructions, check out W3Schools

The way I look at it, you use HTML as the skeleton of your web site. You use Style Sheets (CSS) as your skin. CSS makes the site pretty. CSS @ W3Schools

Also, when making your selection, you will normally be given an option of a Windows based server or a Linux based server.

I always go with Linux. Ball-Pythons.net is run on a Linux server.
