    T-stat probe placement
    Next question...

Where do y'all place the probe on your t-stats? I currently use glass tanks with UTHs. My substrate is a layer of newspaper with a layer of paper towel on top. The probe for my Acurite is taped directly onto the glass in the center of the UTH. When I first set it up months ago I was shocked at how hot that thing actually got! I use a Fluke temp gun to measure the temp on top of the substrate inside the hide. I placed my t-stat probe inside the hide to control the temp there.

I have never had an issue with burrowing since all the hides, rocks, plants, etc. keep paper towels and newspaper perfectly flat. If I put the t-stat probe directly on the glass, I'll have to do some calculations to figure out the hotpoint shut-off to correspond with desired temp inside hide.

Probably overthinking again :rolleye2: Anyway...any input?

Most people will agree tape is a bad idea. BP + stuck tape = bad news

Some suggest using epoxy or hot glue. You need some way to keep the probe down. Even if you've never had an issue with burrowing, it's bound to happen sooner or later, and if the probe gets moved it could cause a dangerous overheating situation.

I've seen many of the same threads in the past, do a search and you'll find everything you want to know

    1. Tape the T-stat probe to the UTH.
    2. Tape the UTH to the outside of the enclosure (on the bottom)
    3. Measure the temp on top of the substrate
    4. If it is too hot, turn the T-stat down. Too cold do the opposite.

I use aquarium sealant to keep the probe down. Non toxic when it dries and easy to remove if needed.
