Most people will agree tape is a bad idea. BP + stuck tape = bad news
Some suggest using epoxy or hot glue. You need some way to keep the probe down. Even if you've never had an issue with burrowing, it's bound to happen sooner or later, and if the probe gets moved it could cause a dangerous overheating situation.

Re: T-stat probe placement
1. Tape the T-stat probe to the UTH.
2. Tape the UTH to the outside of the enclosure (on the bottom)
3. Measure the temp on top of the substrate
4. If it is too hot, turn the T-stat down. Too cold do the opposite.

I use aquarium sealant to keep the probe down. Non toxic when it dries and easy to remove if needed.
