BP Sexing....so, tell me, how is done?

Question of the Day: How do you sex ball pythons?

My two genderless, assumed 'he's' ball pythons are getting up to breeding size and I don't want to have a surprise preggo snake and a clutch of eggs. And to be quite honest, I'm not really for the idea of someone else sexing them. I want to breed in the (far) future and will have to learn how to do it eventually anyways.


Anyone have any tutorials/videos/tips/hints/tricks they'd be willing to share?

not a problem! It takes a little practice but once you do it a few times it's pretty simple.

My older BP turned out to be a male. He's had sperm plugs, so I'm assuming that's a sign that he's more than ready to start breeding. My younger BP turned out to be a female. At first I was confused, thinking I wasn't doing it right. So I checked out some more vids, popped her again, and sure enough, it's a girl!

I also sexed my Black Rat Snake, California Kingsnake, and Brazilian Rainbow Boa while I was at it. The BRS and BRB are both females. The California is a boy.


Everyone was totally okay with me probing around there buts. Except for the California. First, he musked me, then tried to bite, then managed to wiggle loose and take off under the bed. After about half an hour I managed to conclude that he is in fact a male. No boy bits, but quite a lot fresh sperm.


I was pretty excited at the fact that I was finally able to tell who is what. Unfortunately, no one in my house really shares my enthusiasm for it. I offered to show my dad how it's done and he politely said 'hell no'

gah I'm still totally stoked about this :D

Older males may show a false female when popping simply because they have better muscle control when they are older.. just something to keep in mind. sometimes it is hard to tell 100% if a female is really a female unless you probe it.

Adams you tube vid is a great one I watched it and got it the first try.

I am glad that you are this excited, I have the same problem my wife is just like 'I don't care leave me alone'....
