Handled my first blood today
And it was an adventure ! It was always hissing and i could tell it was very uncomfortable, i really thought my chin was toast cause it was ready to bite it. Ive always wanted a blood really bad but im sure this can be avoided by more frequent handling.
EDIT: cool censor thingy, i wasn't aware of that, sorry
Re: Handled my first blood today
I am assuming you meant an Enlightening Experience but in a more colourful langauge :P
Hey stick with it they are fiesty and flighty as youngsters and will puff and hiss at you and even strike but regular handling will bring them to a manageable demeanour in most cases.
Even the adults will generally hiss and let you know they are not ovejoyed at your attempts of handling but they will tolerate you far easier after getting used to handling sessions.....tolerate being the appropriate word when talking about Bloods.
Plus they have that fantastic stare they do that can unnerve some keepers I think its a great characteristic they have.

That stare is the best part...:gj:
Re: Handled my first blood today
I know personalities are different from snake to snake but my sumatran is just a darling got him as a hatchling about a year ago and never had any incident with him. Never struck or hissed at me just like to cuddle (well actually hes trying to burrow into my armpits lol ). I am planing on getting another one soon maybe an albino female. Also have a borneo but I like my sumatran better the borneo is a big capital "B". She will throw her little hissy fits all the time and rather enjoys relieving herself on my girlfriend (lmao). I would say go for it and get one. They are very rewarding animals with such different personalities from bp's and boas.
Re: Handled my first blood today
I don't see how everyone has such problems with bloods, I've NEVER had issues with any of the bloods I've handled espcially my own. I've been able to handle animals that other people couldn't!

They display the attitude and that freaks some people out! The heavy breathing, the hissing, the way they look at you just scares people so they think Bloods are mean and nasty. We're used to that mischief so to us it's no big deal but to some folks who don't know any better these pythons might just be from the pits of hell.
My Blood always backs my friends down with his little displays of hissing and puffin' himself up, and they all own other snakes and yet they still fear The Duke.

lol exactly right and one of the reasons they get a bad rap is the so called attitude they have.
AaronP I dont think everyone is having problems with them mate, I know I dont view anything I have said as a problem or indeed what anyone else has highlighted but they are different than your stereotypical python due to their charateristics which is the main point most are making imo.
They are a superb species to keep ( any of the bloods or short tails ) and especially rewarding raised from hatchlings.

I agree, mine recently "Grew into her eyes" which anyone who's owned a baby blood since it was a hatchling knows what I mean when I say that.
Re: Handled my first blood today
Bloods make a lot of noise, but it doesn't mean that they are ready to bite. Mine like to talk a lot too, but are all very handleable once they are out of their cages. I hope you don't get too discouraged by that one experience. They are really a lot of fun to keep and have a lot of personality! :D
