The inevitable

I picked up a pair of vpi ijs the other day. They are about 2 1/2 ft long and really nice....most of the time. When we handle them they will seem as sweet as can be, but occassionaly they will randomly strike. Two instances so far, one at my gf's face ( she wasnt holding her close to her face, it was just directed toward her face) and another when i was putting the male back in the rack and i guess he decided he did not want to go and turned around to take a swing at me.

I've never been bit by a carpet yet, other than my baby coastal, and it seems like she already makes me bleed enough with her little teeth. I just know its inevitable with these two, the only question is when.

Does anyone else have any good bite stories? do share.

I had a 9 foot Moluccan python that was tame as can be. I got him out of his cage and had him wrapped around my wait as I closed the cage and put the key away. He started crawling up my back and the next thing I know I feel him Latch on to my head right at the top of my neck to about the center of the back of my head. He hit me very hard and it was very quick he let go right away. I put him away and then went to wash all the blood out of my hair. That taught me to trust no snake ever. That was proof postive for me that you can never trust a snake no matter how trust worthy you think it is.

i got tagged on the hand by my 9 foot female, and once by my other large female, but when she was a bit smaller, maybe 6 feet. both drew blood and looked bad, but neither really hurt... the first girl is hook trained now, once she's out of the cage she's pretty easy going. the second girl is fine once you tap her with something to break the hunting instinct.
in my experience though, sub-adults are more likely to 'head butt' you than actually bite, unless it's a feeding response.

Got tagged years ago by a 5-6 foot boa in the back of my head. Bite went from the back of my neck to the inside of my right ear.

My fault, as I was trying to wrestle her into a 55 gallon tank with a few males in it.

She forgave me later that year with a presentation of a couple dozen gooey baby boas!

a hook sounds like a good idea. : ) everytime I get the male out, when I first touch him he turns around real quick and looks at my arm as if he was saying " I dare you to touch me again" . lol

This boa, who is around 4', got me pretty good when I was taking him out of the shipping box when he first arrived.

He was not handled much during his life, and was really trying to get away...I grabbed him too fast and scared him...he turned around and tagged me in the face...

Not the worst bite I've gotten, but definitely the most humiliating:rofl:

Certainly taught me one thing, keep new snakes away from the face, LOL. I pay a lot more attention now when I handle him...
