when to pair (newbie needing help)
hi im new to breeding, have been keeping ball/royals for very long time and have just got my first couple of females up to weight and health i have a female spider at 1300 grams and a female pastel at 1500grams+ my ready males are an albino at about 800grams and a pastel at 700grams i am goint to be cycling the males through each of the girls with 3 days on 3days off, but my big question is WHEN CAN I PUT THEM TOGETHER?

im living in the uk and we have had a real drop in pressure and a real cold front move in, (autumn is well and truly here) so im wondering if i could start pairing them now or not even though i have only had the nightime temp dropped fro just over a week? what do you think guys? any help is REALLY appreciated .

oh btw my hotspot temps in the day is 90 ish and at night it drops down to about 79-82

    cheers

    Now!

Sometimes I start putting males and females together before I even cycle temps ... pair them up and see what happens. It won't hurt anything. ;)

    Hope this helps.

You don't have to drop temps in order to pair snakes up. If you want to pair them now and drop temps next month, that will work ... if you want to pair them now and drop temps now ... that will work too.

Go ahead and pair up that female pastel if she's in shed ... sometimes when the girl is in shed is the best time. ;)

    Hope this helps.

Just out of curiousity,Why is the best time when the female is in shed? Will this not affect a clean shed if they lock up (ie- the same as handling when in shed?)

It didn't affect the sheds when I did that. I think it makes the female a bit more submissive and receptive to the male, but I'm not sure.

Also, for what it's worth, I didn't bother cooling last year and I produced eggs from all three pairings that I did. :)

Just my experience ... it seems that females in shed are more submissive to a males breeding attempts and females that are sometimes slow to be receptive to a male while not in shed, will readily accept a males advances while in shed.

I also think that Dave and Tracy Barker talk about females in shed being receptive to breeding males in their book "Pythons of the World Volume II: Ball Pythons" ... but my memory isn't all that great, so it could actually be a personal communication that I am remembering.

A stuck shed here and there isn't something that concerns me with my collection too much since they are easily remedied.

    Hope this helps.

mine are locked atm! i didnt drop temps (though they drop on there own with the cooler weather in my house) so might as well toss em together ..i was gonna wait till november but everyone else was lockin up already so i figured what the hell and 1st day(or night actually) they locked, i did pull her hides out just incase he got cozy in one and never came out
