It depends on how much you want to see them :D
I use clear tubs and place felt over the two ends to make a 'window' in the front. I use that window to see where the snakes are...especially on feeding night as I have two that love lunging out of the tub. :)

Well, if they are in a rack that is closed off on 3 sides, then they are going to be pretty darn secure no matter what color of tub you use...
And on the other hand, from personal experience: I use clear tubs that are exposed to ambient indoor light. My skittish BP doesn't even like to use his [dark] hides - he prefers to ball up in the corner of the tub under some newspaper. He doesn't seem to mind the light coming in. But this may vary from snake to snake.

Re: Clear or Gray
The type of rack would be important. For ARS or Freedom Breeder racks I would use grey. But for some of the enclosed rack systems like Boaphile I would use a clearish tub.

get the gray with the window in the front. lets you see in, lets some light get into the tubs yet they can feel secure inside a mostly dark "cave". best of both worlds. eventually when I do have a dedicated snake room, I am going to get either ARS or Freedom Breeder racks.

Clear tubs in a rack system. They are going to have three sides that don't get any light in. Plus if it's a clear tub you can check on them without actually opening the tub and bothering them.

I think only one maybe two of ARS racks have the window and I know the cb-70 racks do not have it. The racks with windows are for larger snake or maybe a massive female ball.

ARS (which the OP wants to purchase or has) and Freedom Breeder racks are free hanging and light comes in from every side. I feel the benefit of the animal's privacy far outweighs the benefit the keeper may gain from constantly viewing his animals. I will admit not all balls are shy but if you have a rack of 30 I bet a few are.
