Transporting eggs.... ACK!!!

So here's the situation:

My beloved Het. Albino x Het. Albino clutch is coming this weekend or so ... I've had both mom and dad since they were babies, and I have been wwaaiiiitttiiiinnnng until the day I could say that this clutch is coming. I should be OH so VERY excited...

somehow, with my spur-of-the-moment characteristic self, I'm quite suddenly and unexpectedly moving to Maryland! (Adam is in trouble!!! :P) And now my prized, long-awaited for clutch, is in the line of fire...

Has anyone built an incubator for the car? (it's about 5-7 hours away, depending on good-old traffic) Is there a certain developmental stage that is more tolerable to stress? I know I'm stressed...... :rolleyes:

I was thinking I could make an cooler incubator, and use an adaptor to plug it into the car?

If anyone can help me with this, I would be SO grateful :please:

I would imagine if the ride isnt bumpy and the temps are all held constant you should be fine. But not sure if you would run into troubles with bumps and vibrations for that long of a drive.

Get you some heat packs, and get a styrofoam cooler. Put the heat pack in the bottom of the cooler, put the egg box on top (supported by some grate so not sitting directly on top of heat pack) and use a digital thermometer to monitor the temps.

This late in the development of the eggs, a few degrees drop in temp shouldn't affect them.

I transported two clutches of eggs (Days 54 and 52 into incubation) six hours this summer this way and they all hatched fine!

Are the eggs going to be laid or going to hatch?

If they are going to be laid, I would really hesitate to move them around as much. The first couple of weeks are critical.

If they are going to hatch, I agree with Robin. No big deal. They can handle the bumps and changes a bit more.

I agree with both Heather and Robin. Think of it like this... Normal eggs you can scramble, but cooked already scrambled eggs wont scramble...

What about plugging your incubator into a dc-to-ac inverter cigarette lighter plug?

I'm transporting my snakes (4hrs of Chicago weather, hurray!) and I have 2ft of 11" flexwatt left over...Figured I would just wire the flex in a box with a triac plug it into an inverter in my car and be done with it. I like over-kill if you can't tell.

I know there are problems with surge protectors in the home...since it can interrupt the ac current sine wave, but since its converting a direct current to an alternating, It should be fine for a thermostat.......BUT(!!!!!) Don't take my word for that!! I'm not risking one on that either! But two feet of left over flexwatt - boo whoo :P

I think finding someone to foster your mommy and incubate the eggs would be ideal.

A DC to AC converter will work fine. They have different wattage convereters....for tv, for microwave, laptop etc.

Just don't leave it plugged in with your car off or your battery will go bye bye. :gj:
