Help! Mites!

Ok, I got home from work this morning and went to check on my snakes and low and behold my new adoption Cliodna appears to have mites. I never noticed this yesterday when I fed here. as I moved her from her tank to feeding tub and back to her tank. So it is almost as if they appeared overnight.

Anyways I have a question. Where can I get this Prevent-a-mite I read about on the forum? Also from what I read that stuff is not to be sprayed directly on to the animal just in the cage and furniture, am I correct?

In the meantime I called an emergency clinic here and was told to do the following and I want to know if you guys agree with this
A: Take all the wood furniture and bake it in the oven at 350 for 15-20 mins.
B: Wash the tanks out with scalding hot water.
C: Q-tip and saline to try and remove the mites from in and around the eye area.
D: Rub the body of the snake (except the head) with vegatable oil wait 24 hours, then soak her, then reapply oil for another 24 and soak again.

Has anyone heard of these remedies and do they work or will they work while I am waiting to get the Prevent A Mite?

Also any advice or help on getting some stubborn or hard to get mites out from the eye area?

I think the mites may have came from a half wood log I had as her tank is a simple rubbermaid bin with papertowels as bedding and a plastic waterbowl. Also looks like this is the only one that has them so far. Again any help would be much appreciated.

I recommend that you order on-line a can of Provent-A-Mite (PAM) and use it according to the provided instructions.

PAM will eradicate the mites present in the environment and will also kill the tiny microscopic eggs that will hatch in about 28 days.

Again, please read the directions on the can and follow them to the letter. This ought to do the trick!!

If you can get PAM then by all means get it, but what worked for me was using Nix. I should clarify that it never touched the snake, I only used it on her enclosure, 1 part Nix to 68 parts water. I also baked all her wooden deco. As for her I used reptile relief, followed by a soak, followed by a coat of mineral oil. It was alot of work, but I haven't seen a mite since. And don't forget to get around where it's enclosure is either. Good luck :gj:

Nix as in the head lice treatment stuff?

ok it is a Sunday it will take a few days to get PAM. But what can I do in the mean time? Ever hear of zoo med mite off?

Thats the stuff :) It uses the same chemical that PAM uses, Permethrin, just make sure to dilute it, and I wouldn't put it on my snake but supposedly its ok....

ok so i ordered the PAM, but the store I ordered it from says it could take upto 5-8 business days to recieve. So what do I do until then?

I have the affected snake in quaranteen in a locking rubber maid bin, in a separate room. I have been soakng her a few times a day in clean warm water. I have baked her cage furniture at 350 for 20 mins (made my house smell like pine trees at christmas time). I have rinsed out her tub in hot water (my hot tap water is already over the 170 degree mark). I have tried the oil treatment I have been told. I didn't find the reptile relief but did get a bottle of ZooMed Mite Off to spray on the animal and in the cage

but I guess my BIGGEST concern is what do I do about the mites that are in and around her eye areas? None of the products have been ok'ed to use on head and eyes. I have been using a q-tip with saline and rubbing her eyes getting them off one at a time. Any ideas or suggestion about care of the eyes?
