snake eating frog in back yard, lots of pics

today we were in the backyard hanging out when my wife noticed a frog struggling in our little goldfish pond (12' x 7'). as she looked closer she noticed a snake had it by the leg so she called for me to get the camera... this eastern garter was pretty small and it's prey (leopard frog) seemed fairly large but this guy got the job done in no time... it's nice to see that the pond we dug by hand last year is finally starting to really support some natural wildlife. i'm thinking about transplanting a pair of painted turtles next year. :salute:

Great pics. The prey size-to-head size ratio of snakes still amazes me sometimes. My favorite is definitely pic #5. Thanks for sharing :)

thanks guys! we actually found a second snake hunting out there shortly after i posted these... poor guys must be trying to bulk up before brumation. good thing we have so many frogs in the pond.

thanks, and joanna, it's not too hard or expensive to do a smaller one... i find the pond almost as rewarding as the reptiles i keep. i feel like we're really doing our part to coexist with the natural landscape rather than just bulldozing, spraying pesticides, and having a perfect lawn.
