Here is a suggestion for the ASFs turning your mazuri into powder. I use the same racks but I use 1/4 inch mesh for the ASFs. It makes it a lot more difficult for them to get to the food. More work means they don't play with their food. Mike gave me the suggestion

Also, since those tubs are so high the weanlings will have a difficult time getting to the food and water. Either provide them something to climb on to access the food and water or wean them quick so they don't drain mom of milk.

I bet Mike is wondering when they are gonna start chewing into those tubs. DITCH THE AQUARIUMS MIKE!!!!! USE A RACK THEY ARE A TON EASIER. I haven't had a problem yet. Oh, get an automatic watering system to make your life even easier.

    Lol, good luck!

Yup, the young ones even before their eyes are open will begin to drink water and snack on little bits of food if they can. I have read about people getting extra large water bottles with nozzels that reach all the way down to allow babies to drink water. I'm not sure how to really get the babies food without giving them something to stand on.

I'm building a rack next weekend that has 1/4 mesh. They drink so little that filling up the water bottle isnt really a problem( yet) Thanks for the post!

I've noticed ASFs aren't as nimble as other rodents at a young age. Its like saying shouldn't that two year old be able to play on the jungle gym? I use the same tubs as you. When I didn't use something for the babies to stand on they would fight over any food I tossed into the tub. Also, they would continue to suckle even after being the age to eat solid foods. Any subsequent litters would suffer due to all this.

LOL! NEVER!!!! Remember, I have a fiance that does not exactly care for rodents!!!! One escapee could mean certain immediate death for the entire colony!!!!

Besides, I love to watch them! and they love their wheels! Maybe in a couple years when I get sick of them I will do the racks.

I'm not sure if you really can imagine how young I'm talking about here for beginning to drink and eat. They dont even have their eyes open, and are zooming around the tub. They can't exactly just climb up to the side of the tub to get to the screen, they would have to jump, and they are much to small for that. (plus, blind)

Once weaners, they are still tiny and may be able to maneuver to the screen, but it's just easier to give them shallow tubs like mice.
