How to stop a Blood from pushing
I've done a few threads over the last 2 months concerning my Bloods constant need to push with his face on the front glass doors of his tank. He would push so hard there would be snake slobber all over the glass and his face would end up with a few marks on it from the little ridge where the glass door meets the tank itself, he even chipped away some skin and bled from it to. He would do this for days at a time non-stop.
This is how I stopped it.
1st suggestions from my fellow Blood owners here was to lower his temps a few degrees and see if that calms him down. I lowered them from 88 on the hot side to eventually 82 and still my boy would push.
2nd suggestion was I put his hides back in but again that didn't work either.
The problem he was having was stress and me. I wasn't putting 2 and 2 together to recognize my Blood had outgrown his old 2x3 tank from reptile basics and needed a little more room. He was over 3 feet in length and I just didn't think of getting a bigger setup.
3rd suggestin came from Kara to purchase a 2x4 and he's been in his new tank now for 3 weeks and my guy has been resting comfortably with no pushing at all and his mug is healing nicely. This is why Kara is my Blood Queen.
In short order: My Blood was stressing because his home was too small and because his owner sucks. I should have purchased a bigger tank before this happened. I have failed. :(

Nope. You recognized there was a problem, you took steps to correct said problem, and when you realized that the initial action wasn't the solution, you kept trying until you met the needs of your snake. You certainly do not suck (and don't try arguing with me here, I know when I'm right), you had never experienced something like this before, and did what was necessary to learn how to correct the issue at hand.
Nobody ever had all the answers - keeping animals of any sort is a lifelong process of learning. If we don't remain open to that, we can never grow as keepers.
So I say you get an A+ for fixing the problem!!! :gj:

Re: How to stop a Blood from pushing
Earl, I thought you'd discussed getting a bigger tank before. I've been following your threads and I could have sworn you said something about it before Kara did.
Anyway, it doesn't matter how or why it happened; all that matters is that your problem got taken care of and your blood is now happy and healthy.
Don't put yourself down. Your blood is way better off than most. He has an owner that is attentive enough, and caring enough to know when his blood needs help and get online and do something about it.
I'm sure he's uber thankful in his own snakey little way. ;)

Thanks Mindibun! :)
I mentioned the tank thing before? My memory is terrible so I probably did at some point during one of my ramblings. Personally I blame Patrick for all this confusion. Let's just keep that between us hmmm?

Re: How to stop a Blood from pushing
My blood will push sometimes if she does the deed in her cage and I haven't seen it.
Re: How to stop a Blood from pushing
Well so much for that! I just checked on him and he's pushing.
Maybe being fed only every 10 days doesn't suit him? Perhaps I should go back to once a week.
*sigh*
Re: How to stop a Blood from pushing
Maybe he just wants you to take him for walkies. He's gotta go out.
:8:
Sorry, I know that wasn't helpful.
