Shredded newspaper as substrate?
I was staring at a big bag of shredded newspaper I have that I use for stuffing foraging toys for the parrots and I wonder if it couldn't be used as substrate in a BP rack system for juvvies and subadults?
I would imagine it would be safer than wood, but would still allow them to burrow around if they like.
Thoughts and opinions?
Re: Shredded newspaper as substrate?
I know you can safely use sheets of newspaper as substrate, but I have never thought about using shredded newspaper. I don't personally see where there would be a difference, or a problem with it, but I don't know for sure. I'm curious to know the answer to this also... :gj:
Re: Shredded newspaper as substrate?
will work just fine, people use newspaper all the time as substrate
Re: Shredded newspaper as substrate?
The only concern that would come to mind is ingesting it when eating, but that would be no more of a problem than using aspen. The question is...if you have the newspaper before shreading it, why not use it in whole pieces?
Re: Shredded newspaper as substrate?
When I had my business we would use shredded newspaper as packing and the one thing I hated most about it was the dust! I don't think I would use it for that reason alone. The amount of dust at the bottom of the bin was shocking, IMO!
Re: Shredded newspaper as substrate?
there is a shredded white paper paper product that is safe for snakes, but the newspaper has ink on it, the ink would be another concern if some was ingested
