Shipping Containers..ISBUs
I have become really interested in construction using these unwanted intermodal shipping containers. These are the containers that you see piled up in ports, on back of tractors, and traveling on trains.
These things are CHEAP,an 8'x40' unit can cost as low as $2k and are very strong and well insulated.
There are alot of architects, espically in California, designing homes using multiple shipping containers...

But as I was at work yesterday I noticed one converted into an office on a construction site so I visited their web site and thought what a perfect little snake room or rodent room..check it out

that is pretty much the coolest house ever...
i wonder how one would insulate something like that though...
Re: Shipping Containers..ISBUs
They are insulated already .. I thought. They are fairly kickass, and something like that would be moveable if/when you need to move it. I like that idea .. a lot.

They are very well insulated and dont need any additional!
Re: Shipping Containers..ISBUs
they are called conex boxes. i work for a construction equipment rental company and ours brand new only cost about 2k but they arent insulated at all just bare steel but it probably wouldnt be to hard to convert
Re: Shipping Containers..ISBUs
None are insulated except the refrigerated boxes but the thickness of the steel provides good insulation
Re: Shipping Containers..ISBUs
I have heard of people using them for rat barns and quarantine rooms.
Here is a video I found of one in use as a rat barn.
