    Rat Mix?
Wasn't there a post about Becky's rat mix? It had a list of ingredients. I need that list so I can go to the store and get them. I have made this mix before and can't remember everything that is in it.

Also, is a bean soup mix ok? I found this bag of mixed dry beans for use in bean soup. I was wondering if this is ok to give the rats (it is a mix of like a dozen different dry beans). I ask because I went looking for info on rat diets and this site

    http://www.fatratcentral.com/the-basics/diet/

...said not to feed them raw beans.

Yep, dont feed them raw beans. I remember answering this questions before, I can't really remember the reason not to. I think it has something to do with their digestion juices lol

Here are the posts on the mix:

Only lentils and green peas are ok...no beans. High 'gassy' foods aren't good for rats.

Okay, not that yahoo is all that scientific, this is the only source I've found that talks about why not to feed it to them.

OTHER OFF LIMIT NEVER EVER FEED are
raw dry beans/Peanuts (contain anti-nutrients that destroy Vit. A & digestion enzymes, causes red blood cell clumping)
    raw sweet potato
green bananas (inhibits digestion of starch)
green potato skin and eyes (contains a toxin)
    wild insects
    raw bulk tofu
    mouldy Cheese
    liquorice (suspicions of neurological poisoning)
raw red cabbage (contains anti-nutrients that destroys thiamin)
raw artichokes (inhibits digestion of protein)
    raw olysters/clams

Thanks for the info. Beans are out. My rats don't like the lentils and peas though. They always leave them behind.

Roasted, unsalted, in-shell peanuts are a definite GO though :) They love them.

I used to give those to the rats....they loved them. Are there any other treats I can give them as a little added nutritional boost?

    Fruits, veggies, ect?

I give mine the occasional treat of pure fruit baby food. They lick it up like nothing else...cute to watch. :)

Back when I had rats in college I used to make Suebee's Rat Diet for them. (http://www.ratsrule.com/diet.html) It takes a little while to make, but they loved it and ate everything that was in it. (Oh, I had three rats at a time and it lasted quite a while)

    Here's a very handy link....

    http://www.ratnutrition.com/suppleme...forbiddenfoods

Fruits are great for them though avoid any citrus fruits, especially for male rats. Frozen grapes for instance make a fun hot weather treat. Frozen peas are like rattie icecream LOL, they love it and it's nice on a hot day.

If you're having a wings night, save the chicken wing bones for them. I keep a plastic icecream container (with lid) in my fridge clearly marked RAT FOOD and into it goes the plate scrapings pretty much every night. Two times a week the rats get this. It might look like a big mess to me but they love it and heck it's better than it goes to a landfill I figure.

Right now for instance in my rat bucket are things like - chicken wings, some leftover three cheese pasta shells, some bread ends that no-one in my house will eat, some chicken breast leftovers, etc. Add that to the leftover lettuce in the crisper and you've got some pretty good rattie treats at no cost to you. :)
