Protective snakes?

Ok, last night I had Jaxson out with me.. he always lays in bed with me in the evenings when i take him out, im the only who ever holds him, my husband isnt much of a boa person and he would rather mess with the bps. Last night like normal he was out of his cage and in bed just hanging out on me, not moving just relaxed. A friend of ours came in and was talking to me, every time he moved Jaxson watched him. He would walk around the bed and Jaxson would even go through the effort of moving his head and body watching him move around the room. When he came near me and Jaxson he got in strike position and was just waiting for him to move closer. As soon as he left the room Jaxson was fine. So whats up with that? He hadnt held anything with feeder scent on him, wasnt taunting him, exc. just moving around in the room. So whats up with that?

Unfamiliar scents and movements would be my first guess. I strongly believe snakes learn small patterns and familiarities with us (through consistent level encounters), so this would go to show that something came into his environment he was not familiar with, and he did exactly what a snake would do. Go on guard for himself, and keep an eye on the intruder to make sure he is not attacked by the new thing in his zone.

so less to do with me and more to do with him? There was an intruder in his space thus the reaction? I was hoping I wasnt going to get bitten in the crossfire if our friend walked closer which is why we had him leave the room and i replaced Jaxson back to his enclosure

I think my opinion is well known on the personal attachments when it comes to snakes.

I have seen this behavior with my own animals and friends, and careful observation tells me they are ultimately more concerned with their own safety, and think nothing of the keeper.

I agree with that statement :gj:
