what do you feed your chickens?
I got some laying hens because I eat so many eggs and was wondering what you feed your hens. I am really into healty food and know that free range eggs are far healthier for you than store eggs.

chickens aloud to free range eggs have less cholesterol, fat, hormones, and are higher in lutein, vitamin E, and omega 3s.

My chickens have an indoor/outdoor pen but have picked the outdoor pen clean of grass. I cant let them run around because of dogs and other critters.

so far I feed them layer crumble, pigeon food, grass, fruit, leftover whole grain breads and cereal and now even some high quality cat food.

btw the eggs are delicious and I will never go back to store bought.

Well I would think that makes sence, lol. Thats cool you started doing that- someone in my neiborhood did and people were OK with it- until he got goats and pigs, too. I live in the suburbs, and we all have acre-1/2 lots, but still close enough to where the neibors began to smell it and called the city on him...

We have tons of chickens in our neighborhood. My mom really wants to lure some into our hay barn so they will start living there because she likes to go out and spend time with them. We just feed them scratch grains that come in big bags at feed stores, but we don't have any chickens that hang out for long so I'm not sure what to feed a group of chickens that depend solely on one person for their food.

Mine free range (cooped at night) and have 24/7 access to an organic layer mix that is supplemented with fish meal, flax meal, millet, oats, cracked wheat, hulled sunflower, safflower, a variety of fresh vegetables, and mealworms/super worms as a treat.

In cold months I add cracked corn for extra warmth - too hot to feed in the summer time.

    Wow, lucky chickens :)

We also have lots of fruit around and they are loving cherries right now.

mine are on scratch right now, i'm switching them to layers mash next month, when they are hopefully old enough to start laying. They get fruit scraps and things, occassionally i'll buy mealworms for them as treats, and they get my leftover crickets each week, because the petstores always give me more than i ask for.
