Had to bite my tongue...

Rant

I found out that a guy I work with (at home depot) also works at a near by pet store. It is a pretty decent pet store when it comes to reptile care. But oh did I have to bite my tongue when I found out this guy had a bp.

I was looking at bigger hides for LD when he came over to say hi. He then proceeded to ask me why I needed two hides (hmm I thought you had a bp?) He then asked if I had a female to mate to his male. I do not so that ended that. He then told me his snake hadn't eaten in 11 months and he was force feeding it (I am screaming inside). I ask him why he finds that necessary. He replies "I have been feeding him like that for 6 months" (gee, I wonder why your snake wont eat!!)

He then offers me one of his *extra* hides (no thanks, I don't want your mites). Then the topper on the cake - he doesn't use UTHs because they get too hot (at least he knows that) so the 100 watt lamp he has is turned on EVERY FEW DAYS:O:O:O:O:O

I try to tell him a few things without being pushy - but I can tell he doesn't care.

I've heard similar and worse. It's quite sad... lots of people are fully convinced that what they do is the right stuff since the animals are still alive. SIGH. It's really hard to deal with, but when they won't listen there's nothing we can really do.

I regularly have to deal with someone who has three corn snakes, all of different size, in the same 40gal tank together with no hides, no UTH (heat lamp), and a crummy screen top with rocks to hold it down. I've tried before to politely inform her of proper care, but she wants to hear none of it. She 'can't afford to get each snake it's own cage and eq, and they're just fine where they are'. So I have to bite my tongue every time I talk to her...

Just be strong and inform as many people as will listen as you can. We can only hope the informed will someday outnumber the ignorant.

Thanks Adriana. It sucks big time because I see him every time I work and he will bring up his snake. Each time he does I try to slip in a tid-bit of info to him without making him look dumb, but it still just breaks my heart. The worst part is that he is trying to breed......eugh.

Why don't you point him here to bp.net

I actually did mention the site to him, but overall he doesn't seem very up to taking in any new info.

Tell him that people on here sometimes do breeding loans. It might spark his interest enough to check it out.

I really dislike people who disregard any care tips they get.

ESPECIALLY when they work in a pet store. I remember the rant I gave some guy at Petco trying to sell me calcium sand for my Beardie.
