my baby got hurt by a mouse
so we were feeding clarence a mouse like we always do and he struck the mouse and killed it immediately when it was about half way down his throat i noticed he had apiece the almost the size of a dime ripped off his neck. i dont know how it happened i was watching the whole time. i let him finish his food cause i didnt want to pull it out of his throat.
i put some neosporin w/o pain killers on it and put him in a little 10 gal aquarium with a lamp on papertowels with a small hide.
am i missing anything?
how often do i need to neosporin him?
he just got rid of mites so is this going to effect the healing process?
what should the humidity and temp be like?
how long should it take to heal? (i realize this isnt an exact science but i'd like a ball park please)
will it scab and then fall of like a human?
sorry im asking so many questions im just scared to death for him!!:tears:
Re: my baby got hurt by a mouse
Neosporin twice a day.
No, healing will continue as normal.
Humidity and temps should be the same as before the injury.
Maybe a couple sheds, depending on how deep the bite was. (aka a couple of months)
It will scab up (yellow) and fall off, but may become a scar (either black or white colors)
Re: my baby got hurt by a mouse
I'm not an expert, but I've had a snake get bit by a rat before. Probably by the next shed it will start fading. I would say that it will scab a little, but not like a human. It will gradually get smaller as he sheds. It will heal normally if he is healthy and the neo will help, but I wouldn't worry too much. If it starts to look infected or ever gets worse, take him to a vet.
Re: my baby got hurt by a mouse
thank you for answering all my questions. ill let you know how it goes.
Re: my baby got hurt by a mouse
also when should we feed him again and what should it be? something real small?
Re: my baby got hurt by a mouse
Try switching him to frozen/thawed. I'd imagine you wouldn't want this to happen again and most snakes will make the change with few problems.
As long as it's healing up ok (not swollen or infected) I think keeping him on his regular schedule and size would be fine.
Re: my baby got hurt by a mouse
I have a snake that had a similiar problem, only his injuries came from a cat. I was on vacation, and a friend was watching my place, long story short, Loki got out of his tank and my friend found him the next day. He had three pencil-thick areas, about 3-5 inches behind his head. When I got home, they were white (infected :( ) and so required vet treatments.
He got a shot, and I had to give him 2 follow up shots, along with
using non pain-killer Neosporin twice a day.
By his first shed, they were smallish pink spots. By the second shed, pink dots.
Today, Loki is still a happy, healthy snakie, and you can only see his scars if you look for them. Though, the three 'bite marks' are now covered with darker scales.
With some TLC, your baby will be back to his normal self before you know it. :)
