Het Pied Markers? Co-Dom?
Hey all,
I have been seeing a lot lately on the "het pied markers". Doesn't that make Pied a Co-Dom mutation? Or are not all het pieds "marked" a little clarification would be great. Thanks.
Adrian
Re: Het Pied Markers? Co-Dom?
Not all het pieds have the markers which is why its not that reliable
Re: Het Pied Markers? Co-Dom?
As freakyfrog states not all het pieds have the markers and not all ball pythons that have the markers do not always prove out. The markers are more of a hint at what genes the ball python could have than a rule on what the ball python has.
Re: Het Pied Markers? Co-Dom?
cool, good to know.
Thank you
Re: Het Pied Markers? Co-Dom?
The way I see the het pied markers is if you get a import or captive hatched baby that has some of them it probably isn't het pied. I would only use the markers when you know one of the parents is het pied then you can look at your clutch and have a pretty good idea which poss hets will prove out. The ones without the marker can still prove out but I think the ones with the markers always do if one of the parents is known to be het. Hope that makes sense.

I would still say that pied is recessive but it sure seems to have co-dominant tendencies. In nature not everything fall neatly into the text book categories we come up with.

Randy..Iv'e wondered,if the het markers are random, and the amount of white is random as well...Then perhaps the two could be related to each other, and not be so random at all..ie,low white pied producing all non-marked hets,or vice versa.(Would be cool if we could make low white, high white, and 50/50s "on demand".)
