New substrate?

Where I work (grocery store) we have these huge rolls of this giant soaker pad stuff. It gets put under our meat counter to soak up blood, and under the milk so soak up any spills. My boss allowed me to take some home to try it out, but I haven't yet. It's basically 3 layers, a paper layer on top, a thin toilet paper-like absorbant material in the middle, and thin plastic on the bottom. There are no inks or dyes in it, pure white. It's used in the food industry so I can't imagine it could be harmful at all. I'm just wondering if you guys think this is safe to use as a substrate for my bps?

The reason I want to try this, is because at the moment I'm using unprinted newspaper. Everytime a snake defecates, usually the whole paper is soaked, and the snake is left sitting in a wet enclosure. Same thing goes if the snake tips its water bowl. I don't like to let this happen. So I'd like to use this soaker pad to prevent this. Good idea? bad?

Worth a shot. See how it works out and if your snake likes it.

Yes, I work in the meat department at Giant Eagle right by my house, and we have the same white soak pads that come in rolls. I'm glad you mentioned that, as I will definitely have to try that out. Put a layer of that down, then some paper towel or kraft paper on top. :gj:

I don't see need to put anything on top of it, the top of the stuff I have is very smooth and would be the same if not better than a paper substrate.

The only concern I'd have Peter is your reference to "thin plastic" as being the bottom layer. Personally I'd test it out with your heat source without a snake present to see how this thin plastic reacts to constant heat. You wouldn't want to find out later that it gets soft, sticky, puts off fumes, whatever if there's a snake in there while it's doing that.
