Get a professional, or at least somebody with a lot of experience, to probe it. A vet that deals with reptiles would be your best bet. If not done properly you can really harm the animal. Done properly it is perfectly safe.

There are several popping videos on YouTube. I certainly hope gently popping them cannot hurt them, I tried it with my baby, and while things "popped" I still can't be sure (if he is male he is not obviously male to the untrained eye). Another video/article I saw said if the animal appears female it is hard to tell unless you are an expert and can probe the animal, as it could still be male. But I am sure those with more experience can say whether that applies to adults as well as babies.
I thought this video by Ralph Davis was pretty good as he clearly explains what he is doing:
I would not recommend probing or popping to an inexperienced keeper/popper. Take it to a herp vet.

yeah i watched that video about ten times before i felt even close to comfy to pop em, but after i got over being nervous, i just did it gently, and it was pretty telltale, but i think that i might have to do it again later on down the road, im not sure. lets just say that it was easy after i calmed down, but im still not 100% positive that my snakes are the sex i think they are. its just what you're comfy with yourself i guess!

Timely question! I just popped a bunch this morning, my first time. I watched Ralph Davis' video over and over again.
Hub carefully kept the head out of the way. I'm right-hand dominant, so I put the tail to my left side and, just like his video, rolled my left thumb up and applied gentle downward pressure with the right, and out stuff came.
I think I'm going to get the hatchlings pretty soon out of the egg, next time. After they eat, it's messy.
