Ball Python Shedding questions!
How often do ball pythons or snakes in general shed? I know the process can last about a week or two, but how long is it between shedding?
I just got my little ball python (normal) a couple days ago, this is my first ever reptile of any sort, and it looks like it is getting ready for a shed.
Any pros out there want to give me some pointers? I have been looking at all the caresheets about ball pythons and shedding and forums about it, but no one discusses the general range of time between the sheddings.
Re: Ball Python Shedding questions!
Time between sheds depends on the snake and is pretty closely related to growth. When they're young they shed more frequently and as they get older and start to grow less the time in between sheds gets longer. I would guess a younger snake would shed every 3-6 weeks and an older snake may shed 6-10 weeks, but those are a complete guesstimates.
Re: Ball Python Shedding questions!
As has been mentioned, young one's shed more often and shedding depends on their food intake and rate of growth.
If yours is in shed, remember to keep the humidity between 55%-60% so the shed can be a perfect one. Also, some snakes prefer to be left alone during the process and others could care less if they are held, etc. Also, some snakes eat and some don't during the process and so always offer food on the regular feeding day.
Lastly, make sure to check the shed skin for the eye caps and tail tip and also check your snake for any left over pieces of shed :gj:
Good luck!
