    Newspaper?
I've been breeding rats for about 2 12/ years. I've had great luck with strong colonies. Does anyone use Newspaper along with pine shavings? I usually put down a think layer of shavings and then rip up long strands of newspaper so the mama's can build nests.

I do pretty much the same . I use a thin layer of pine shavings, two heaping cups of equine fresh and newspaper that has been run through the shredder. Wooks Great! Minus the equine fresh for new borns.:gj:

I usually just lay some newspaper on the botton and then put aspen on top of that. The ratties usually do all the shredding for me. It's worked well for the 2 years that I've kept them.

I use gene-ripe, same as Equine Fresh, and a few handfuls of torn paper, and a few handfuls of aspen shavings. I find the torn paper and aspen gives them something to nest with.

I keep this mix whether I have newborns, pups, or just breeding adults.

Every few days I just scoop up the paper when feeding them and replace it.
