Re: Another Petco Rant...
Oh.. I could tell you bloodcurdling ones about my old manager 'cleaning' the reptile enclosures back at Petsmart... Huge SIGH. This was a woman who cleaned finch cages with a shopvac (and we lost quite a few birds to that method).
I feel for that poor little guy, but they probably didn't. If they'd lost it, they would have written it off and ordered two more. We had a beautiful Schneider's Skink at the store, subadult and a total sweetheart. That manager and her 'speed, speed, and more speed' attitude toward cleaning moved so fast she scared him which caused her to drop and STEP on him (his tail). He ran and I found him an hour later sitting on the pump to the fish filter system. His tail was broken and swollen. Took him to the vet fast but an infection did him in. I was thinking of buying him, too. :(
And that was just ONE thing that manager did to a reptile. Tons of anoles and Long-tails were fried because she put a huge heat lamp over their little tank. Frogs were cannibalized because she stuck multiple species together in one small enclosure. And many other things that were a huge factor in my leaving.
Re: Another Petco Rant...
I was at a petsmart last week and they were selling a young retic as a corn snake with a card written by the manager on the cage saying great first snake for your kids that gets about 3ft and can live it's whole life in a 10 gallon aquarium. Luckily there was a guy there that knew what it was and bought it while he was there just so that it didn't end up as some inexperienced young kid's pet. The guy was flipping out at the store manager telling her how dumb they were and she tried to argue that she's been selling reptiles for years and that she knows what she's talking about. Very Scary

Re: Another Petco Rant...
Somehow I'm not surprised...
My manager when I worked at PetSmart used to think carrots were an acceptable cure-all for any mammal's problem. Wet-tail, cannibalism, runny noses - all could be solved with a carrot.

Re: Another Petco Rant...
Our petco now sells Red Tail Boas. And guess what. Now there's been a growing number of that species on our craiglist. Joy. :(
Re: Another Petco Rant...
Oh none of that surprises me... those people are all about money. You should see the outdated and just plain wrong caresheets, feeding instructions, and info cards on the reptiles. I was constantly having to correct stuff that people were reading and hearing...
I worked there for almost 9 months. I was there that long for the people and animals. Period. I love helping people learn proper care for their pets, and I wanted to make life better for the animals at that place. After a while, the crud building up just got to be too much. At least I can still help people from time to time in other ways.
I hear that carrot thing. It's the only 'fresh food' they give to any mammal. I had to fight a lot to get them to give the Guinea Pigs oranges.
