Weight question!

ok, my male ball python weighs about 794 grams. i have no idea how old he is, as i rescued him, and didn't get much info from who i received him from. about how old do you think he is or can you not tell by weight? he didn't eat for 2 months before i got him.

Its hard to guess by just the weight alone as just like people each individual snake can grow at its own unique rate. To give you an example I have an 07 Female that weighs around 800gs yet I have an 05 male thats been hovering around 950-1000g the last 2 years.

Ditto that. Also, I would shy away from taking your snake to the pet store to weigh it. You may trust pet stores, but they do carry some very harmful things to your snake. Ecto parasites being the most common and hard to get rid off.

Just a word of caution.

Herpers need to keep things like that in mind in regards to proper quarantine.

You can pick up a kitchen scale from walmart to weigh your snake and keep track of his progress.

Also should mention, I know your excited about this new snake, but givin his current condition, it would be BEST to minimize the stress and leave him alone as much as possible until he has good weight on him and is completely healed of all wounds.

Constant holding, peeking, arranging of his surroundings, taking him on trips, etc etc is not helping him. BP's are very shy and secretive, preferring to be in a warm hide rather than being messed with. ;)

If he is subjected to constant stress, he may start to refuse food and become ill. Especially so when he is already recovering and his immune system is already compromised.

i just brought the snake to the store because i thought the nice gal amanda was going to be there and she is the closest thing i have right now to a professional opinon. i wanted to show her how much better the skin on his back looked, and get her opinion. he was very calm and relaxed the whole time we were there. i will try to borrow a digital camera to show you all what the burns look like now. very different.

AGAIN, thank you for the advice, and i didn't really think about parasites getting caught at the petstore, i wouldn't have thought of that. it's a clean place, but none the less they breed rats and birds there so who knows what is in that place!

Anywho..

I concur with everything she says. Your new snake needs to settle in, without any bothering, holding, toting to the pet store, etc. Just leave him completely alone for a week and a half to two weeks other than changing his water, let him get properly settled and eating on a regular schedule, THEN you can start slow, short handling sessions.

If you let him settle in properly, he'll be more apt to let you handle him without hissing/striking or him getting stressed. Stress = Not eating.

You're going to have him for the next 25 years, why not leave him alone for a week :)

Have you checked with the vet about his burns? Silvadene cream works wonders and will help lessen the chance of scarring.
