Augie ate 2 mouse fuzzies
well, after being suddenly picky and shy about eating over the winter, and then finally fasting completely for many weeks, my male BP *might* have broken his fast today finally.
he's seemed interested in food, but when he would get right up next to it he'd change his mind and go hide again.
He was feeding on F/T small rats and that's what I have been offering. Actually I have been offering ASF F/T for a few weeks to see if that enticed him. No success.
So today I was feeding Rio the baby boa his mouse fuzzies, and I thought 'well, maybe Augie the BP will eat something that can't possibly be intimidating in any way"
I dangled a fuzzy in front of him and POW it was gone in a flash.
I fed him a second one 10 minutes later.
He is still looking for more, but I figure I will let him digest that as a fast-breaker and then try a small rat next week to see if he's been appetized.
Question: If he won't take the rat, is it at all useful to keep feeding fuzzies? He hasn't lost any significant weight. I suppose if he won't take the rat next week I could try picking up some adult mice to see if he's turned back into a mouser for some reason....what do you think?
Re: Augie ate 2 mouse fuzzies
I would try the adult mouse this week and see what happens - If he goes for it try feeding adult mice for a while then try the rats again. If he doesn't go for the rat you know you've got a mouser on your hands. That is what I would personally do but see if anyone else has a different game plan.
Re: Augie ate 2 mouse fuzzies
I think that's probably the way to go.
it's weird though, since he ate rats all last year with no problem.
I love these crazy creatures :D
Re: Augie ate 2 mouse fuzzies
Auryn stopped eating F/T completely for awhile (he was on mice). After trying every technique in the book for F/T mouse preparation, trying F/T rats, live small/small rats... I tried live mice and he pounded them immediately, no hesitation.
So, I've been doing live. I'm actually making my first attempt at F/T in awhile...I'm hoping after giving him two weeks between his last live feeding and this one will have him willing and eager to eat the F/T. If not, back to live mice. I'd like him back on F/T...mostly because I've got 1.5 trays of jumbo mice in the freezer!
Re: Augie ate 2 mouse fuzzies
I've been avoiding live ... if he refused I'd have a situation on my hands :(
I still can't believe he went for a dripping wet mouse fuzzy. I'm glad though, it's a start.
I just can't wait until he's feeding normally again! I've missed interacting with him so much!
