Will corn snakes grow out of being so snappy?
Hey all, I have a fiesty corn who most of the time is pretty mellow till ya try to pick her up. Then she gets all fast like.. Any ways to the point. She likes to strike at me about 3 times real past like. Once while in my hands she turned and struck and hissed up a storm. She did this also the first time i had picked her out. She is so small that it is just cute so to speak. But I am curious will she grow out of it? Or are they always this crabby? Should I be taking her out more so she can get used to me better? Thanks all..

I haven't had one since I was a kid, but mine started out wicked and with routine handling became a pretty neat pet...
Re: Will corn snakes grow out of being so snappy?
I would say there's a 95% chance she will. Most do grow out of it. I've found that the real nasty ones will usually settle down a lot when they get to be ~6 months, give or take. However, there's always that one spawn of satan who never settles down. But I bet with regular handling your snake will calm down.

my girl is evil when shes in the tank... when i open the lid she thinks FOOD ( yet to turn down a meal ).... so i know its partly my falut. once out shes cool and relaxed but i wouldnt stick my hand in there with out letting her know its not food time..
Re: Will corn snakes grow out of being so snappy?
Corns are typically fiesty, fast and nippy as babies and slowly begin to chill (less nippy, less fiesty, not as wiggly and fast during handling sessions).
My corn, who will be 2 years old in late summer, is really just over the past 2 months or so started to calm down and be handleable, although he hasn't been nippy since a few months after I got him.
Go slow and do regular but not too long handling sessions and hopefully your corns will learn that 1) cage opening isn't always food and 2) you're not going to hurt them so they don't need to be defensive. =)

Look at it thru her eyes. You are this BIG thing picking her up and possibly going to eat her :O.So she goes into over load on protecting herself. They do grow out of that most of the times but some are just honary :P.I would just gently remove her from her enclosure and see how things go.Good luck :gj:

Thanks all. I was hoping to hear that this should pass. Unless she's pure evil:D..
Most od the time she is pretty chill but once in awhile she just freaks.. Its cute now with her temperment but I do know as a adult it would suck.. For me that is.. ;)
Re: Will corn snakes grow out of being so snappy?
Chances are very good she will outgrow it. Sounds like pretty typical behavior for a baby Corn.
You can almost see the exact moment when they overcome their fear. I had an adult male rescue who was a real handful. After a few weeks of short handling attempts (5 minutes each) I was having a pretty good day with him and decided to hold him until he settled down. After about ten or fifteen minutes he just gave up.

Wow very cool. This is good to know. I can guess the adult bites are on the same line as a BP? Not that I have experienced either as of yet. The lil one (corn) just feels like someone is tapping me rigt now..

Oh trust me, a bite from an adult still feels like nothing (unless, of course, they hold on). :) I had one of those spawns of satan corns and she finally got me once: Hardly left a mark. I traded her to a breeder who didn't care about temperament as much and now I'm working on my two young ladies...teaching them that handling can be nice. Both are coming along well. It just takes gentility and patience. :D
