Right now I'm using NatureBark (I'm guessing it is more or less the same as ReptiBark:rolleyes:) but I'm thinking of switching over to aspen when I clean the tank out, probably in a week or so. I know paper towels and/or newspaper is preferred for first time owners, but I really would like something a little more aesthetically pleasing, if you know what I mean. I would think aspen would be easier for spot cleaning, too, than what I'm using now.

My thermostat just came, and I didn't want to start another thread for it so I'll just post here. It is not what I had expected. I've never used a thermostat for reptiles before and I figured it would have something for me to actually set the temp I wanted, but it is more or less just a dimmer : / I guess it would be more accurate than a lamp dimmer though?

It has a probe sensor, but whats the point if I'm using an Acurite?

It has velcro on the back to mount it to the tank, but I'm using poster background. Can I just stick it to the poster or should I cut out a piece of the poster to mount it directly to the glass? I'd rather stick it to the poster, at least that way I wont have velcro permanently stuck to the outside of the tank. You never know when you might have to move the tank, right?

On your substrate question, I use aspen in most of my tanks. I prefer the type that is small pieces rather than the shaved pieces. The small pieces tend to pack down really well and it is very easy to spot clean. Give it a shot and see how you like it.

As for the thermostat, the Zoo-med one is better than nothing however I will always recommend one of the more expensive ones since can actually set the temp by number instead of by the dial. For the one you have, you'll need to attach it to the cage (to the poster is fine, just let the glue for the velcro cure for awhile before sticking the thermostat to it). You'll then need to set it somewhere in the middle and watch your temps on your thermometer. You will probably need to set it just a bit above the middle to get the right temp.

If/when you get enough to buy a Ranco or Helix/Herpstat, you'll find it much easier to use and much more accurate.

i use aspen in my tanks, and it really is easy to spot clean. also, if i put a lot in the tank, my babies love to burrow all through it! it's kind of cool to watch and see all the little tunnels they make, lol. definitely a little more pleasing to the eye as well. :)

I tried aspen in my cages and discovered that it was difficult to see when they had peed a small amount and ridiculous to clean when they had pee'd a large amount. I truly felt that I was not able to keep their environment clean.
I use indented kraft paper that I buy from u-line and have delivered. It is a light brown paper and so I don't mind the look of it.
I have a bunch of aspen left that I've sealed in a bag and will probably use for my boas when they grow large.
