I've been looking into getting a leo and I have a question on feeding. Is it better to feed crix than mealies?

Mealworms are a good staple diet for leos but it is also a good idea to supplement with other insects like crickets, phoenix worms, silkworms, feeder roaches, etc.

I prefer feeding mealworms myself and is the staple diet for my leo. It is always good to supplement the diet from time to time though. Gutloading is really what is most important. The biggest problem with mealworms is they have a fairly tough outer shell which is a little harder to digest. My leo really likes them and is very healthy and active which is what counts. If you think your going to use mealworms as your staple diet I would recommend breeding your own. It is extremely simple and takes some time but I think it will pay off in the long run. I also have some fire-bellied toads that will eat some of them as well.

Rather than mealies, which are only suitable for adult leos due to the hard outer skin, a staple diet item should be Phoenix worms. I have never yet known any lizard to refuse them, they are much more nutritious, and squirm around a lot to attract feeding responses. Wax worms, mealies, and silkworms are great supplemental feeders.

Past baby/juvie stage I've never been able to get my leos to take an interest in the phoenix worms.
