    Personalities of Het Axanthics
    Hey Everyone,
Has anyone here who owns het axanthics noticed a tendency for unnecessary striking? I have 1.1 het for axanthic pair. They are from the same line but different breeders. Both are early 07 s and the male is a tad smaller than the female.

The male is the striker and I've been handling him every few days since he's been here. He strikes at me, anyone who passes by while he's being held and also shadows. He is fine while he's in his enclosure with the exception of feeding. He has to strike 2-3 times before catching the prey.

The female was a striker when she got here but with persistent handling she has mellowed quite a bit even tho she still has her moments. She nails her prey on the first strike every time.

Anyone know if it is a difference between male/female het for axanthic thing or just a general personality trait of axanthic/ het for axanthic???

    Are they VPI Line Axanthics?

VPI Axanthics tend to be strong feeders. Most of the babies I produce are a little nippy at first, but usually calm down with age.

I have hatched 20 plus Het VPI Axanthics, and out of all of them, I have had one male that was nippy. All of the rest of them are as mellow as the next snake. I can, however, second what Jon says about the feeding. My Axanthics and Hets are some of the best feeders and growers that we have.

Our son's snake is an 06 male 66% het VPI Axanthic from 8Ball. I'd say Buddy definitely has a strong feeding response (drop in rat, draw fingers back fast if you'd like to continue to have all of them LOL). He's got a tendency to be a bit nervous at first when he's out and is a more cautious young snake but I don't know if that's anything to do with his genetics or just Buddy being Buddy. Once he gets over his inital reserve, he's a good snake to handle though.

We have an 07 Female Het VPI Axanthic that is a strong feeder, but she has never nipped at anyone in our house since we got her directly from VPI.

We also have an 06 Male double het for VPI Snow (VPI Axanthic/Albino). He came from Ralph Davis and is the son of his big VPI snow. Talk about strong feeder, he doesn't even have to position himself, he just strikes. Other than that though he is a great snake to handle. He is my little buddy as I drove all the way to Ralph's and picked him up and person and managed to be totally in awe at Ralphs facility

We have a VPI axanthic female from 8Ball who is a doll! Great feeding response that comes out when we've pre-scented the room prior to Thursday night feedings. After two days of digesting, she is mellow until feeding day! Each feeding day we do not hold the snakes...sort of conditioning them.....
