Handling of tree pythons?
Hi.
I am thinking about getting a tree python sometime, but i heard they are very aggressive and have the biggest fangs out of the python.
I am just not used to handle aggressive snakes,so do you grab it with a hook or how does it work?
THX
Re: Handling of tree pythons?
I have very limited experience with a GTP that my friend owns but from what I've seen they are a Display pet animal. You handle them with the hook and try not to get it close to you:D They are fast....I mean really fast!
Re: Handling of tree pythons?
I know there are some GTP and ETB breeders that say they cant be handled like a corn or BP, but they can be handled. I've also heard most often they make great "look but dont play with" animals. I would try emailing some breeders and seeing what they say about handling issues.
Remember, Bloods were often tagged as vicious and those babies make me squeel with joy. ;)

I only have experience with one, but mine is a sweetheart to handle... during the day. At night, I can't even get close to her cage without her striking.
During the day she is a very easy going, curious snake that loves to stretch out when she finally wakes up. She's never shown even an inkling of aggressive tendencies during that time.

Mine is the same way - easy to handle during the day - active tho not sluggish like a ball - but come sun down anything that enters the cage is grabbed, wrapped and eaten - be it a rat or a hand. :D
Re: Handling of tree pythons?
Lawrence is right... a lot of the tree snakes can be handleable, but only during the day. At night time their feeding responce is incredible. Also, tree dwelling snakes are built differently than ground dwellers. You must be very careful removing them from their perches so not to damage their vertibrae.
Re: Handling of tree pythons?
Ok i guess i have to figure a way out that works for me and the snake.
Re: Handling of tree pythons?
I don't have any personal experience with them but they have always been a favorite of mine and am hoping to get one myself. From the research i have done i have found the easiest way to get them out of the cage is to use removable PVC perches. You can heat them up with a torch and twist them, then paint them to give them some texture and to make them look more naturalistic. So then you simply remove the perch lessening the stress on the animal and simply slip the little guy or girl off. And if youre really afraid get a hook or some snake gloves. And i wouldn't expect a great "pet" snake because its not expected like a ball python but i can't wait to get one myself either as a display only or a nice handleable snake they are hands down my favorite snake out there.
Re: Handling of tree pythons?
i have a biak that still has not changed its color.
i havent had it long but it will bite pretty much at will i use neoprene gloves to handle it and sometimes it bites more than other times.
ive heard that most under a yearling will bite but i havent handled any adults.
im sure mine was an farmed or wc baby im leaning to farmed.
also note that some locales are supposedly worse than others and ive been told that biaks are either really nice or they are meaner than a hornet as adults im still trying to handle mine as much as possible.
