    Normal ? or stripe ?
Hi. I picked up this BP in a trade a couple of months ago. It has a nice stripe towards the tail, is this normal? I picked him up to breed with a female. I am thinking he is a she. I probed it 3 times on both sides and get 5 scales on each side. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

A probe depth of 5 scales is usually considered a female. My male probed 9. And my female probed around 3 or 4. So your right in thinking she's a SHE. Haha

And as far as the stripe goes. I think all 3 of my normals have it too. So it must be pretty common.

They consider striped like: a solid stripe running from the head back to the tail. Which is not the case. Or like a "black back" which isn't really a morph. But its a lack of anything on the spine making it black from the head to tail.

Great looking girl you got there!!!

Yes it is normal for normals to have a stripe like that.

To be certain of sex, popping and probing is best. Some females can probe 5 deep.... I have a few like that, and they are proven females.

Thank you. Unfortunately it was supposed to be a male.

How do you not know the difference between a normal stripe and a genetic stripe, yet you know how to probe? God I am a noob.

    Willy-
Actually, I have well over 100 snakes and breed several different species.
However this is only the second ball python I have ever owned.

Probing is actually quite simple. I just assumed that female BP's are 2-3 subcaudal scales like many other pythons.
