Neato.. they are awesome fish. I know of someone who used to have them.. though they are presumably illegal in NY. I don't see why; I know that one would not be able to survive a Buffalo winter in Lake Erie, probably. But the nonnative cool-water fish that everyone keeps? Sure, allow them!
Nice fish. I was wondering what you feed it? I had some Pacu years ago and they are closely related but are not carniverous?

When living in Erie I remember they were illegal, but we had owned Pacu, which is similar.

Thanks Gin! I know...I'm right by Lake Erie, and it gets COLD here...I'd love to see one survive the winter. Supposedly, someone caught one fishing here back in the mid-late 90's.

I feed mine minnows, and pieces of lean beef, along with stuff like tropical fish feed, and shrimp. I did have some other fish that were supposed to be compatible with them, but they were turned into fish chow overnight. Those that were, were my Pacu, my Freshwater stingray, and Plecostomus. They're neat fish, for sure!

I have (and still do sometimes) considered keeping them. I love the black ones with the gold flecks.
Majestic and fairly intelligent creatures.
A dimly lit 180g with bogwood and plants and a half dozen of those fish would be an awesome sight to behold.

Its because of people letting them go in the summer that some places are banning them.Pirhana will eat anything that is in the tank with them ;).

Andrew be carefull feeding him the beef as it can cause your filters to clog up.It happened to me when i kept pirhana and it burned up the filter.They will eat anybody in the tank with them unless its a larger tank and the other fish does not cross his boundry line ;)

Nice picture. do you only have one? they are much more outgoing fish when in groups.

I have a nice sized group in a 55 gal. tank :P
