    Get a temp gun.

But before that, just touch the hot spot. If you can't stand the heat, turn it down. Better to be a bit colder for a while than too hot for your critters.

I think even better would be a probed thermometer; put the probe inside the tub right on top of the heating element. You can get them at wal-mart for only a couple of bucks.

I just rearranged my cages and racks to make room for more!
With my 4 racks I have to set the t'stat higher to get a correct temp in the tubs because the tubs sit up off the flex watt a little bit. I have Rich's sweater box racks and they hold Iris tubs. I have a Helix on them. When I put the probe right on the flex watt, I had to set the Helix way up to get the correct temps in the tub. Now I put the probe just a couple of centimeters off of the flex watt and running parallel (since the upper 2/3 of the probe reads the temps) and that has done the trick. I have the Helix set to 93 and my tubs range from 90.8-92 depending on where the tub is in the rack. I have an Acu-rite in each tub to tell me at a glance the ambient temp and humidity and have a temp gun that I use twice a day to check the internal temps of the tub (I'm a bit compulsive with the snakes!) I also make sure to check the inside of the hide temps as well. IMO, you really need a temp gun for racks and so I'm glad you're getting one soon!!

The issue with the probes thermometers is that they can be off by several degrees. I agree that the best way to tell is by touch; the bottom of the tub should not even feel warm, really. Human body temps are higher than what balls need and so the tubs should feel a bit cool... Temp guns really are needed with racks!
